This is the stuff that legends are made of. . .

Black Hand Gorge was the half way point for Indians traveling to Flint Ridge in Newark to gather flint for tools. They would stop there to rest and begin making their tools. The white man was encroaching at this point and that is where this story takes us.

Conflict between the white man and the Indian. There was an Indian maiden; both a whiteman and an Indian loved her. One night she met the whiteman on top of a cliff; the Indian followed them. The white man and the Indian fought. The Indian fell; his hand caught on an outcropping, ripping it from his arm. As he lay dieing on the rocks below, he uttered a curse: the white man would die before his severed hand turned black.
